The Sol Hus Experience

Located on Kangaroo Island’s stunning north coast, Sol Hus offers guests an off-grid, minimalist experience where nature takes center stage. Visitors are encouraged to slow down, immerse themselves in the rugged coastal landscape, and reconnect with the ocean. Each cabin, designed with Scandinavian simplicity, reflects a commitment to low-impact living – embodying the essence of 'friluftsliv,' a Nordic concept of embracing life outdoors.

Beyond sustainable accommodation, Sol Hus dedicates 50% of its profits to AusOcean, actively giving back to the ocean that surrounds it and supporting critical marine conservation and education projects.

Why AusOcean?

AusOcean is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to using technology to better understand, protect, and conserve the oceans. Their work includes deploying underwater cameras for live-streaming marine environments, building low-cost ocean technology, and running STEM programs for schools. Operating across South Australia and New South Wales, AusOcean believes in open data and collaborative science to drive meaningful change for marine ecosystems.

With Sol Hus’s support, AusOcean can continue its mission to protect the local marine environment. This partnership directly benefits the northern coast of Kangaroo Island, where AusOcean is actively working to restore shellfish reefs. These reefs provide a home for diverse marine species, filter the water, and protect shorelines, making them essential for healthy marine ecosystems.

Through Sol Hus’s commitment, AusOcean is able to amplify its work on Kangaroo Island, including the Network Blue program at the local high school, Kangaroo Island Community Education. This program equips students with hands-on STEM skills, using ocean technology to monitor the health of their local marine environment. By staying at Sol Hus, guests are directly supporting this next generation of ocean guardians, providing them with valuable resources and tools to contribute to environmental science.

A Shared Vision

The partnership with Sol Hus reflects AusOcean’s belief in connecting people with nature and inspiring action for ocean health. For AusOcean, this collaboration is about more than financial support – it’s about fostering a community of environmentally-conscious travelers who appreciate the beauty and significance of our oceans. Sol Hus guests don’t just visit; they become part of a wider mission to sustain and restore marine life on Kangaroo Island and beyond.

Through their collaboration, AusOcean and Sol Hus invite travelers to experience Kangaroo Island in a way that is mindful and impactful. This partnership is a testament to what can be achieved when eco-tourism and conservation unite, providing unique experiences that leave a positive legacy for the oceans.
